Do I need to worry about the Coronavirus COVID-19 during my trip in Peru?

Although, it is contagious you don`t need to panic but follow travel guidelines.

What is the coronavirus?

Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases, such as MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). Coronaviruses are transmitted between animals and people. The new strain is called COVID-19 acute respiratory disease (novel coronavirus), and it had not previously been identified in humans.
The new virus appears to be spreading from person to person. It may be spread by respiratory droplets when someone coughs or sneezes. But it’s unclear exactly how it spreads or how contagious it is. Research is ongoing. This virus is new, so not much is known about it yet.

How many cases of coronavirus are in Peru?

As of March 13, 2020 there were a total of 28 cases in Peru. All this people are isolated monitored by health entities.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of COVID-19 can be mild to severe. Some common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death. A vaccine isn’t currently available.

How do I protect myself?

The WHO and CDC recommend that you take the usual precautions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth if your hands aren’t clean.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces that you touch often.
  • Stay home from work, school and public areas if you’re sick.

Should I worry about the coronavirus?

You should take precautions and not panic. The illness is generally quite mild, especially for children and younger adults. However, complications may occur in 1 to 5 people who catch it needing hospital care. Elderly people and people with medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems and diabetes are more likely to develop complications. People with fever, cough and difficulty breathing should seek medical attention and isolate themselves.
