Day 10 Chinchero Weaving – Moray Circular Depressions – Maras Salt Ponds – Journey by train to Machu Picchu Town
Our travels today take us to the town of Chinchero (3772m/12375ft) with the remains of what was the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui, as well as a beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations. Our visit will take us to a local´s home to observe a weaving demonstration of traditional textile arts using natural dyes and ancient techniques. Then a visit of the small colonial church and ruins. Have lunch in La Casa del Barro Restaurant in the same town. After lunch we drive up to Moray that was built by the Incas around the 15th and early 16th Century and abandoned and lost in time for 400 years. Engineers and scholars have speculated for many years the significance of these terraces since it was first photographed in 1931. The general accepted theory is that this place was an agricultural research center for developing different crop strains. The theory was that climates of many different ecological zones were present at this site and the deep natural depressions caught sunlight and shade in such a way as to create different temperatures within a small area. Australian physicist Dr. John Earl´s theory cannot sustain itself because this area has calcified soil and very little rain which would be a constraint to crop research. There are no building remains that would have housed seeds, staff etc. New studies by Wright Paleohydrological Institute (WPI) with a collection of engineers, archaeologists, scientists and other experts of Moray during October 2005 and February 2009 came to another conclusion and ruled out Dr. Earl´s theory. After our scientific, historical tour you can come up with your own theory. Drive down to the colonial town of Maras and continue along the side of the mountain to the Salt Mines (3180m). The Pre-Incan salt ponds of Maras was created by the Chanapata Culture (AD200-AD900) pre dating the Incas. Once it supplied the entire Inca Empire as well as the Viceroyalty of Peru. With its unique system of extraction, it has about 5000 ponds, each belonging to a local family. Salt ponds usually form near the ocean which leads to believe that Maras was once covered by one. The families harvest the salt by hand without using machinery and distribute the salt all over Peru. Drive to the town of Ollantaytambo to board the train to Machu Picchu town. Spend the night in a comfortable hotel.
