Day 10 Chinchero Weaving – Moray Circular Depressions – Maras Salt Ponds – Journey by train to Machu Picchu Town
Our travels today take us to the town of Chinchero (3772m/12375ft) with the remains of what was the royal hacienda of Tupac Inca Yupanqui, as well as a beautiful colonial temple built on Inca foundations. Our visit will take us to a local´s home to observe a weaving demonstration of traditional textile arts using natural dyes and ancient techniques. Then a visit of the small colonial church and ruins. Have lunch in a local restaurant in the same town. After lunch we drive up to Moray that was built by the Incas around the 15th and early 16th Century and abandoned and lost in time for 400 years. The general accepted theory is that this place was an agricultural research center for developing different crop strains. There are no building remains that would have housed seeds, staff etc. Drive down to the colonial town of Maras and continue along the side of the mountain to the Salt Mines (3180m). The Pre-Incan salt ponds of Maras was created by the Chanapata Culture (AD200-AD900) pre dating the Incas. With its unique system of extraction, it has about 3000 ponds, each belonging to a local family. The families harvest the salt by hand without using machinery and distribute the salt all over Peru.
